The 2nd World Summit for Social Development

Global society is riven by deep inequalities – political, social, economic, ecological, technological. The inequalities are deepened by produced divisions around economic and political status, genders, ethnicity, indigeneity, caste, faith, and location, to name just a few. There are more simultaneous deadly aggressions in the form of international and civil wars, and persistent persecution of human rights and climate activists, than ever before in recent decades.

Despite global aspirations and commitments such as the SDGs or the Paris climate agreement, the past 15 years have seen little progress, with the exception of sheer child survival years or access to primary education.

To address this oppressive human condition, the UN is convening a summit on social development in Doha, Qatar, 4-6 November 2025. UN member states have developed a preliminary political declaration, UN agencies are preparing situation analyses, and academics and civil society will present progressive proposals.

To give insights into these preparatory steps, the German Society for the United Nations, the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD), the Global Policy Forum Europe, Bread for the World, and Women Engage for a Common Future are organising a public event on 15 October in Berlin.

Speakers include @MagdalenaSepúlveda  and @KatjaHujo both of the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD); @Reiner Hoffmann, German Council for Sustainable Development; @ChristinaBehrendt of the ILO; @Nicola Wiebe, of Bread for the World; and myself @GabrieleKoehler, for WECF.

Do join us, please! Registration here. Event is in person, and in German.
